SPOT Kids in La Jolla to host open house, free screenings

SPOT Kids, an occupational therapy and speech therapy clinic at 7632 Herschel Ave. is having an open house 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. May 11, and will offer free hearing, speech and handwriting screenings for children conducted by speech language pathologists.

Celebrating their first year at the new, larger location (formerly in Bird Rock), owner Jenny Burke said the new location is meant to look like a house so children feel comfortable being there. She also said the expansion is so they could offer classes and tutoring in addition to speech and occupational therapy.

Spotting potential deficits early is important, which is why there will be screenings at the May 11 event. Burke said, “Screenings allow for early awareness of what skills may not be on par, and if they aren’t on par, there is help. Some parents might not realize there are things they could be working on early to allow for normal development and to allow for kids to have the most optimal setup (going to school). So when they enter preschool and kindergarten, they have everything they need to be successful.”
