Adopting an Easter bunny this year

While most animal shelters discourage families from getting rabbits at Easter, your Rancho Coastal Humane Society in Encinitas is encouraging families to adopt Easter Bunnies. On Saturday, March 30 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. chocolate bunnies will be available for adoption for $20 at the Encinitas PETCO store. The “Adoption Certificates” can be redeemed for a 20 percent discount at the RCHS Thrift Shop in Cardiff by the Sea or $20 off the fee of an approved pet adoption at the shelter.

RCHS Community Liaison Nick Winfrey explains, “On Saturday, March 30th we’re holding a four hour Easter Bunny adoption drive at the PETCO store at 154 Encinitas Blvd. in Encinitas. You can adopt a chocolate (brown) Easter Bunny. Each bunny comes with its own adoption certificate.”

“Some people still don’t ‘get it’ that buying a rabbit just for Easter is a bad idea,” says RCHS spokesman John Van Zante. “Pet rabbits can require up to 12 years of feeding, cleaning, grooming and medical care. When people get tired of the rabbits they dump them or release them into their neighborhood. Some end up at a shelter or rescue. But for others those four lucky rabbits’ feet are anything but lucky.”

Winfrey adds that rabbits can be wonderful companions. “They’re loving and social animals that need human attention. That can be anything from play time on the living room floor to sitting on your lap while you watch television or cuddling in your arms.”
