Time change ushers in full game-schedule and home runs for La Jolla Youth Baseball

It has been a couple of weeks since the glow of 2013 Opening Day, and the new Padres uniforms have some grass stains on them. The kids have been having a lot of fun around the La Jolla Youth Baseball fields.

The games are pretty relaxed and skill development is definitely the priority over winning. Part of this may be due to the coaches’ participation in the Positive Coaching Alliance workshop hosted by LJYB in February.

Another factor may have been the shorter days before daylight saving time kick-in on March 10. If games only get through 3-4 innings, there is less interest in posting a score and more interest in developing another pitcher or shortstop in a low-stakes situation.

“Homer’s Alley” is a popular page on the website at LJYB.org. This is where all of the home runs are recorded, starting with Trevor Ace’s dinger on Opening Day at the Bronco Field. Ten days later on the Mustang Field, Solis hit back-to-back 2-run homers to lead PacVentures to an 8-4 victory over B of A Home Loans. Since then, Michael Campagna and Alexander Steigerwald both hit 3-run bombs in Bronco, followed by Tyler Blackburn’s first HR in Mustang. Word to the wise: Beware of where you park at the Bronco Field!

By all accounts, LJYB is off to a great start. The fields and the facilities have never looked better with extensive repairs completed at the Bronco bleachers (thanks Garden Communities and the Posnock Family). Coastal Coatings Painting Company did a terrific job painting everything in sight at the Pinto and Mustang fields; thanks Kevin Roberson!

New helmet and bat racks have been installed in all the dugouts. The Casdin Family donated them for Pinto, Mustang and Bronco fields. Jamie Abrams designed and installed the first set of racks in the Pony dugouts as part of his Eagle Scout Project.

Jersey Mike’s of La Jolla just wrapped up its LJYB fundraiser by donating 500 free sub sandwiches to friends and family of LJYB, who in turn made a $2 donation that went straight back to the league. Thanks Steve Miller and all at Jersey Mike’s La Jolla for continued support of La Jolla’s youth sports programs.
