UCSD to break ground on La Jolla medical building named for Qualcomm co-chair

Qualcomm co-chair Steve Altman and wife, Lisa.

Construction is set to begin Thursday, Jan. 10, on a seven-story medical building where UC San Diego researchers will be expected to translate their findings into practical applications.

The $269 million Altman Clinical and Translational Research Institute on Campus Point Drive will enable laboratory and clinical researchers to work side-by-side and share resources in their efforts to better understand and treat diseases, according to UCSD.

The building is named after Qualcomm co-chairman Steve Altman and his wife, Lisa, who pledged $10 million toward the project.

“We are thrilled that the Altmans have stepped forward to accelerate a project that has been our dream for many years — to have a special building dedicated to having researchers and clinicians working side-by-side with patients to address major diseases,” said Dr. David Brenner, vice chancellor for UCSD Health Sciences. “Their gift will help us provide personalized care that focuses on using the most advanced technologies to care for San Diegans and people from around the globe.”

Dr. Gary Firestein said the building will allow laboratory scientists and clinical investigators to “translate clinical research results into clinical practice.” He is a professor of medicine who will be the director of the institute.

The building, scheduled for completion in three years, will be near Thornton Hospital, the Moores Cancer Center and the Sulpizio Cardiovascular Center.
