Tiger Woods commits to compete in Farmers Insurance Open in La Jolla

Six-time champion set to return to Torrey Pines later this month

Tiger Woods, winner of a record six Farmers Insurance Opens, has committed to compete in the 2013 Farmers Insurance Open, a PGA TOUR event which will be played January 24-27 at Torrey Pines Golf Course in La Jolla. It will be Woods’ first appearance to the Farmers Insurance Open since 2011. His last victory at Torrey Pines came in 2008 where he started the year with a victory at the Farmers Insurance Open and returned in June to capture the U.S. Open title in one of the most dramatic finishes in the history of any major championship.

Woods’ return to dominant form in 2012 included three PGA TOUR victories at the Arnold Palmer Invitational, the Memorial and AT&T National. With these victories Woods’ passed Jack Nicklaus on the all-time PGA TOUR wins list at 74 leaving him second to only Sam Snead at 88.

Success at Torrey Pines has proven to be a precursor to major performances for Woods as he has won a major championship the same year in five of his six victories at the Farmers Insurance Open. His last major championship victory came at the 2008 U.S. Open at Torrey Pines Golf Course. All-time Farmers Insurance Open money leader at over $5.7 million, Torrey Pines has provided a great start for the 14-time major champion’s season.>

The commitment of Farmers Insurance, Century Club of San Diego and city of San Diego to elevate the Farmers Insurance Open to one of the PGA TOUR’s premier events has continued to positively impact the field. Along with Woods early commitments include Brandt Snedeker (defending champion and FedExCup champion), Phil Mickelson (three-time champion), Bubba Watson (past champion and Masters champion), Dustin Johnson, Rickie Fowler, Keegan Bradley, Hunter Mahan, Nicolas Colsaerts, K.J. Choi, Bill Haas, Nick Watney (past champion), John Daly (past champion), and Ben Crane (past champion). The field is not final until Jan. 18 at 5 p.m. ET.

“Farmers Insurance is proud to have a player of Tiger Woods stature and historic record at Torrey Pines and the Farmers Insurance Open in our field” said Chuck Browning, Head of Sponsorships and Corporate Giving, Farmers Insurance. “Tiger joins an elite field including Phil Mickelson, Bubba Watson, Rickie Fowler, defending Champion Brandt Snedeker and many others that will help us continue to grow the charitable impact of the Farmers Insurance Open in the San Diego community.”

“It is great for our community to have 14-time major champion Tiger Woods start his PGA TOUR season at the Farmers Insurance Open,” Executive Director Peter Ripa stated. “His seven victories at Torrey Pines including a U.S. Open has brought some epic finishes that live in golf history. We are excited to see the next chapter the last week of January.”
