Contemporary plastic surgery trends are a direct reflection of today’s society, both in terms of the economic challenges faced by many prospective patients and also the incredible cosmetic advances achieved by medical science in recent years. These days, patients are looking for less-expensive alternatives to invasive plastic surgery – and in doing so, adopting the notion that less can be more. Popular injectables like Botox®, Juvederm®, Sculptra®, ViPeel Face Peels and Laser Skin Resurfacing can provide patients with the lifting, tightening and rejuvenation they desire – all without the expense of a full surgical procedure. Of course, as with any form of surgery, it is still important for patients to seek out a board certified plastic surgeon before undergoing injectable treatment.

Injectables: a rising trend among plastic surgery patients

According to the American Society of Plastic Surgeons, invasive cosmetic plastic surgery procedures decreased by 9% between 2007 and 2008. Meanwhile, the number of non-invasive cosmetic procedures, such as laser treatments or injectables, increased by 5% — a shift that illustrates the number of patients who can no longer afford more expensive procedures, or take the additional time off to support a lengthy recovery period after surgery. In addition, many patients – especially women – are becoming increasingly interested in non-invasive cosmetic procedures as a preemptive anti-aging measure. More and more, men and women alike are opting for the youth-reviving effects of products like Botox®, Juvederm®, Sculptra® and ViPeel over surgery, and starting treatment earlier in life to establish an effective maintenance routine.

Such a routine serves to combat the natural aging process, which causes skin to lose thickness, elasticity and tone, and to take on a thinner, less vibrant appearance. Known by some as the “wrinkle relaxer,” Botox® is perhaps the most well-known injectable filler designed to counteract the aging process. Juvederm® also helps replace lost volume in the face and delay the need for invasive procedures, while Sculptra®, or “the liquid facelift,” is a volumnizing treatment that stimulates collagen production at the injection site to plump up the face and reduce visible wrinkles while restoring a more rounded, youthful face shape.

By combining these procedures to turn back the clock, patients truly can experience a “less is more” alternative to plastic surgery – complete with less recovery time, less expense and less anesthesia. However, it is critical that patients approach only the most experienced surgeons in order to ensure safe and natural-looking results. Despite being billed as non-invasive procedures, injectable treatments can nevertheless trigger complications and negative reactions if applied incorrectly or without the proper equipment and facilities.
