La Jolla High varsity water polo coach Tom Atwell, a Challenged Athletes Foundation Triathlon supporter and participant (along with his varsity team), helped raise funds for the CAF. Varsity water-polo players assisted challanged athletes as they exited the triathlon swim in La Jolla Cove last week to the bike transition area. Coach Atwell and his team have volunteered at this event for the past 10 years.

The Challenged Athletes Foundation welcomed thousands of supporters, spectators and participants to the La Jolla Cove on Sunday, Oct. 21, 2012 for the 19th annual Aspen Medical Products San Diego Triathlon Challenge. The unique event boasted an all new “challenge distance” triathlon course consisting of a 1-mile swim, 44-mile bike and 10-mile run on one of the most breathtaking courses in the country.

Tom Atwell, 46, of La Jolla had the best time in the Individual Open, Men’s division in the Challenged Athletes Foundation’s 2012 San Diego Triathlon Challenge with a finishing time of 4:21:53 after competing in swimming, biking and running.

In the Individual Open, Women’s division, two La Jollans finished with the third and fourth best times. Jodi Murray, 34, was third with a finishing time of 4:37:51. In fourth place was Marty Andrerson, 45, in 4:37:51.

The full day-long event included the 24-Hour Fitness Tour de Cove cycling marathon and Kaiser Permanente Thrive-5K Fitness Walk and Wawanesa Family Fun Zone,

Oct. 21 marked the “best day” so far in this triathlon’s history as more than 750 participants (200 of which were physically challenged athletes) gathered at La Jolla Cove for the 19th annual Aspen Medical Products San Diego Triathlon Challenge (SDTC). Athletes completed a 1-mile swim, 44-mile bike, and 10-mile run as individuals or as part of a relay team. Among those participating were pro athletes like Jordan Rapp, Chris “MACCA” McCormack, Sarah Piampiano and Jamie Whitmore, legends like Bill Walton and Scott Tinley, celebrities like stars of ABC’s “The Bachelor,” and dozens of our Paralympians home from London. This year’s event raised over $1.2 million for CAF to help physically challenged athletes be able to participate in the sports they love.

The event began 19 years ago as a small fundraiser to help a local injured triathlete regain his independence through the sport he loved.  Today the Challenge has grown into a celebration of life and sport that is making a difference in the lives of physically challenged athletes around the world.
