As a frequent bicyclist and motorist here in La Jolla, I'm glad to see a spirited Light discussion about bicycle/car road safety. Motorists who haven't recently ridden a bike in traffic on our crusty roads might be more understanding if they'd take a wheel around the village. Cyclists who don't drive would benefit from a driver's seat perspective of bikes weaving through traffic unimpeded by stop signs and common courtesy. As bike commuting is on the rise, we can all benefit from considering what might be done to make our roads safer for all. One proposal our British friends are considering is well explained in this recent article: "Make cycling proficiency a compulsory part of driving licence" http://goo.gl/FttIi
