UC San Diego to establish center for Chinese studies

UC San Diego officials announced July 10 that a university in China will establish a Chinese studies center on the La Jolla campus.

The center, set up by Fudan University of Shanghai, will serve students throughout the University of California system.

“This center will provide superb opportunities for students in Chinese studies at the University of California,” said UC President Mark Yudof.

“Besides the many long-term benefits for faculty, students and researchers across the UC system, it will cement our relationship with one of the university’s most valuable partners in China.”

Fudan University, which hosts the UC system’s “Education Abroad Program,” is ranked 11th by academic reputation in the Quacquarelli Symonds 2012 Asia University Ranking, according to UCSD.

The new center will work closely with UCSD’s International Relations and Pacific Studies “21st Century China Program,” which researches China policy.

The program’s dean, Peter Cowhey, said the study of the U.S.-China relationship “has never been more important” because the Asian nation is a rising economic and military power on the Pacific Rim.
