Athenaeum concert pairs famed clarinetist and quartet

A special collaboration concert will be presented 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, April 3, in the Athenaeum Music & Arts Library, 1008 Wall St., with clarinetist Boris Allakhverdyan and La Catrina Quartet.
Born in Baku, Azerbaijan, of Armenian descent, Allakhverdyan was a first-place winner of the Hellam Young Artists Competition and winner of a Tuesday Musical Association scholarship and Oberlin Concerto Competition. He is a founding member of Prima Trio, and the grand prize and Gold Medal winner of the 2007 Fischoff National Chamber Music Competition.
In 2009, he was appointed associate principal clarinet of the Kansas City Symphony and also serves as principal clarinet of the Colorado Music Festival Orchestra in Boulder.
Hailed by Yo Yo Ma as “wonderful ambassadors for music,” the La Catrina Quartet blends Latin American and standard repertoire. Their infectious personalities infuse their playing, creating truly compelling performances. The quartet has a triple mission — to perform the masterworks of the string quartet repertoire, to promote Mexican and Latin American art music worldwide, and to work closely with composers in order to promote the performance of new music.
Both Boris Allakhverdyan and La Catrina Quartet have performed their own concerts at the Athenaeum in the past.
Tickets are $40 for members; $45 for nonmembers at the door, (858) 454-5872, and www.ljathenaeum.org/chamberconcerts.famed

Hats off to the members of the City of Del Mar’s Finance Committee Pension Sub-Committee for the 18-plus months they spent learning the ins and outs of the City’s $23,000,000-plus pension obligation. They really have a well-researched understanding of the issues and the politics and the challenges of the City’s pension liability, and as we approach the next […]
  • Time to forget or time to remember? May 18, 2013
Jordan Rosenfeld, in his letter of May 9, said it’s time to stop the comparisons with Hitler and Nazi Germany, such as made by Jim Donovan (me) and Tom Pickwell in making their (separately submitted) cases against Big Brother in America and his ever bigger and bolder encroachments upon the liberty fought for by our inspired founders and guaranteed by the Con […]
