Country Day boys, Bishop’s girls advance in state basketball tournament

La Jolla Country Day boys basketball team defeated Montebello Cantwell Sacred Heart on Wednesday night in the first round of the Division IV CIF state tournament.

The Torreys were led by Sage Burmeister, who had 17 points. Frank Bamford also added 16 points in the win.

Up next for the Torreys is a road game Saturday night at Price (Los Angeles). The Torreys are the No. 6 seed while Price is the No. 3 seed in the Southern California bracket.

Also on Wednesday, The Bishop’s School’s girls basketball team topped St. Paul (Santa Fe Springs).

The Knights now head to No. 3-seeded Winward (Los Angeles) to play their second round game Saturday night.

Windward is the defending state champion.

As for the La Jolla Country Day girls, they will play their second-round game at home against Campell Hall (North Hollywood) at home Saturday night at 7 p.m. The Torreys had a first-round bye.
