Cosmetic breast enhancement: understanding patient options for breast augmentation and breast lift surgical procedures

Patients can discuss their options for breast implants and breast lift procedures prior to surgery for optimal results.

Most women can think of a thing or two they’d change about their bodies if they could; and for many of these women, bigger, perkier and more youthful-looking breasts are at the top of that makeover wish list. Since the 1960s, women have been seeking out breast enhancement surgery procedures in order to look and feel their best – and today, these surgeries are among the most commonly performed plastic surgery procedures in the U.S. Depending on the shape and size of their breasts, and whether or not they have had children, women interested in improving the appearance of their breasts may be candidates for either breast augmentation or breast lift surgery. However, as with any surgical procedure, it is important to discuss these options and other considerations with a board-certified cosmetic plastic surgeon.

Breast augmentation is the process by which a plastic surgeon uses silicone gel or saline implants to increase the size of a patient’s breasts, and is appropriate for patients who would like to add size (as opposed to lift) to their silhouettes. For most patients, the procedure is performed with an incision around the areola – where the colored skin around the nipple meets the surrounding skin of the breast. This “periareolar” incision is usually a semi-circle that comprises less than half the distance around the lower part of the areola, and is designed to minimize scarring while providing the best possible exposure for the surgical procedure. While many patients prefer to use silicone breast implants for this procedure, both silicone and saline implants are safe and approved by the FDA for both reconstructive and cosmetic procedures. Patients are encouraged to discuss the differences between saline and silicone implants with their surgeon prior to surgery in order to select the right approach for their unique needs and desired expectations.

For patients who are generally pleased with the size of their breasts, but feel that they sag or have lost firmness, a breast lift (or mastopexy) may be a more appropriate procedure than breast augmentation. The size and shape of the patient’s breasts allow the surgeon to determine the best approach for this procedure, which often includes the removal of excess skin and, in many cases, the sculpting and re-positioning of underlying breast tissue to reveal a well-contoured, firmer appearance. Breast lift surgery can help women look and feel better, and make clothing drape in a more flattering fashion on the body.  Many times, both size and shape need to be corrected. Performing a breast augmentation and lift at the same time accomplishes this goal and can be customized to each patient.

Individualized treatment and custom consultations for naturally beautiful results

At SK Clinic, we personalize each and every breast enhancement procedure performed at our La Jolla plastic surgery facility to suit the needs and goals of our individual patients. This includes a detailed medical analysis to optimize surgical results while minimizing scarring and other signs or side effects of surgery.  Our skilled surgeons are experienced in a number of alternative means by which to make breast implant or breast lift incisions, as well as techniques by which to add internal support for post-operative recovery: and above all, we don’t fit the patient to the procedure – we tailor the procedure to the patient for customized, natural-looking and safe cosmetic surgery.

In addition, we are dedicated to patient education, and make it our mission to help women maintain the transformative effects of breast enhancement surgery long after the procedure is complete. We urge women to wear properly fitting support every day to maintain the shape and firmness of their breasts, and to choose sports bras appropriate to the level of intended activity when exercising.
