La Jolla High students renovate school garden
After the seeds were planted, the rows were watered to allow the fertilizer to seep in.

Before the Thanksgiving break, students from Howard Tenenbaum’s environmental science class worked on fixing up the La Jolla High School garden.
The garden is on a narrow strip of land surrounded by a concrete wall on Rushville Street at the end of the football field.
Originally, the garden was created as a scout project and had a wide assortment of fruits, vegetables, and herbs. However, once the project was completed, it was not tended to and a large portion died as a result of a weed infestation.
Incorporating gardening into his lesson, Tenenbaum said he decided to take his 2 AP environmental science classes and conduct an experiment with different fertilizers and seeds to see what would grow best in this environment. The goal of the project was to teach students to appreciate the hard work that it takes to produce food and to realize that a farmer’s job isn’t easy.
Tenenbaum said he plans to continue to take his classes to the garden throughout the year and get it back to its lively state.
