[imagebrowser id=199]A group of La Jollans toured the community’s namesake submarine, the USS La Jolla on Monday, several days after the crew visited local schools and lunched with locals.

They stopped at La Jolla High, Muirlands Middle School and The Children’s School. They also were treated to lunch at Alfonso’s by Shirley Wilson, who, with her late husband Bob, was a sponsor of the submarine.

It was originally to be named the San Diego, but when it was discoved that another Navy ship had that name, then Congressman Wilson stepped in and asked that it be named La Jolla.

The 360-foot fast-attack submarine of the Los Angeles class based at Pearl Harbor was in San Diego for the 30th anniversary of its commissioning. Before pulling in at Naval Station Point Loma, the La Jolla took part in exercises to prepare for its next deployment, according to the Navy.
