One-way street, unifying theme among ideas to beautify La Jolla Coast Boulevard walkway

Making Coast Boulevard one-way and replacing existing landscaping with educational signage or decorative elements like benches, boulders or children’s play equipment were among ideas suggested at a Saturday, Oct. 1 public workshop.

Hosted by La Jolla Parks and Beaches Inc. and led by landscape architect Jim Neri, the workshop on beautifying Coast Boulevard walkway was held in the Friendship Room at 939 Coast Blvd.

Participants filled out questionaires during an hour-long, on-site inspection of the walkway describing what they liked and didn’t like about existing conditions. They then met in small groups to barnstorm ideas discussing improvements that might be made.

The notion is to beautify Coast Boulevard walkway in conjunction with Children’s Pool Lifeguard Tower’s replacement.

Many agreed with longtime La Jollan Melinda Merryweather that extending the modern, curvy decorative walkway in front of 939 Coast Blvd. through to Coast Boulevard above Children’s Pool could act as a unifying element.

The workshop’s 36 participants overwhelmingly agreed with La Jolla Community Planning Association (LJCPA) trustee and past president,Joe LaCava’s suggestion that dropping the summer moratorium shaving as much as a year’s time off replacing Children’s Pool Lifeguard Station is a good idea.

Neri will now synthesize ideas collected at the Oct. 1 workshop and return in a couple of months with a design plan to present to La Jolla Parks and Beaches Inc.

Hats off to the members of the City of Del Mar’s Finance Committee Pension Sub-Committee for the 18-plus months they spent learning the ins and outs of the City’s $23,000,000-plus pension obligation. They really have a well-researched understanding of the issues and the politics and the challenges of the City’s pension liability, and as we approach the next […]
  • Time to forget or time to remember? May 18, 2013
Jordan Rosenfeld, in his letter of May 9, said it’s time to stop the comparisons with Hitler and Nazi Germany, such as made by Jim Donovan (me) and Tom Pickwell in making their (separately submitted) cases against Big Brother in America and his ever bigger and bolder encroachments upon the liberty fought for by our inspired founders and guaranteed by the Con […]
  • One Paseo – I really don’t care May 18, 2013
I really don’t care if Kilroy builds the One Paseo mixed use project. I am retired. I can wander over to Carmel Valley after the noon time rush and before the Torrey Pines High school gets out around 2:45 p.m. […]
