Weapon found in water at Children’s Pool

An unloaded machine pistol and 44 bullets of different calibers, many of which were the wrong caliber for the weapon, were discovered Tuesday, Aug. 9 at 12:15 p.m. by someone on the crescent-shaped seawall overlooking La Jolla’s Children’s Pool.

“They saw it from the wall in about 2 feet of water and called a lifeguard down to look at it,” said San Diego Police Det. Gary Hassen. “It turned out to be a MAC-10 fully automatic machine pistol.”

Hassen said a police diver was subsequently called in to retrieve the weapon, which police now have custody of and are checking its serial number to see if they can determine the owner.

It is illegal to own a MAC-10 in the state of California without a proper permit.

The MAC-10 is a highly compact, blowback-operated machined pistol developed by Gordon B. Ingram in 1964, according to Wikipedia.
