A groundbreaking was held Tuesday for a $456 million cardiovascular center for Scripps Health that will consolidate treatment programs at Scripps Memorial Hospital, Scripps Green Hospital and Kaiser Permanente when it opens in 2015.

The seven-story Scripps Cardiovascular Institute is considered by Scripps Health to be the cornerstone of a 25-year master plan for improvements of the hospital campus in La Jolla, adjacent to UC San Diego.

More than 200 doctors, nurses and clinicians assisted with the design of the 168-bed facility, which will include large windows for natural light in patient rooms, computerized observation stations and decentralized nursing stations.

Patient rooms will offer wireless Internet access, LCD screen televisions and pullout couches so family members can stay overnight.

“Our vision is to build the world’s finest cardiovascular institute right here in San Diego — providing the best in heart care for our community and serving as a destination for heart patients everywhere,” said Scripps President and Chief Executive Chris Van Gorder.

“Scripps Cardiovascular Institute will be a catalyst for collaboration, drawing on the clinical expertise of some of the nation’s most brilliant physicians and scientists, the most advanced technology and ground-breaking clinical research,” Van Gorder said.

According to Scripps Health, the system treats 55,000 heart patients annually.

Scripps and Kaiser recently signed a 10-year extension of their 30-year-old partnership. Scripps provides cardiac surgery and interventional cardiology for the KP members in San Diego County.
