Your View: There’s another side to Children’s Pool donation

Whoever wrote the story on the dedication of Children’s Pool 80 years ago in the May 26 edition failed to present the facts accurately. The seawall, not the pool, was presented to the City of San Diego on May 31 by Jacob Chandler Harper, attorney for and close confidante of Ellen Browning Scripps.

Most people today would not agree that the seawall was EBS’s most important gift. Torrey Pines Park and Scripps Institution of Oceanography are just two of the more significant gifts she made. Ms. Scripps loved the natural world and especially the sea, and if she lived today, she would no doubt want Casa Beach (enclosed by the seawall) to be a rookery for harbor seals.

I really think we should all stop saying things like "If Ellen Browning Scripps were alive today she would want…" None of us know what she would have wanted. There are probably only a handful of people who have actually met here left and even they were probably pretty young then!

"Ms. Scripps loved the natural world and especially the sea, and if she lived today, she would no doubt want Casa Beach (enclosed by the seawall) to be a rookery for harbor seals."

I don't see how a comment like this helps anyone. Completely subjective and pointless.

It doesn't help anyone. Nobody really knows what Scripps would think about the seal controversies. We can all guess but that doesn't help with either argument.

I saw an interview with someone who knew her and she said that she loved children and would have wanted the seals removed. While I agree with sharing, the friend did not.

Wow, that's means nothing to me! Who said it? How old were they when they "knew her"? And on top of that they are still trying to predict what she might have felt if she was here to see what's going on.

You sound like a little kid! "Well he said that she said that she was blahblahblah!"

Hudnuts…. what, does every email complaint you submit to the Light on your POV get published as an editorial? Two short paragraphs of worthless drivel we have heard for years and years… waste of cyberspace even.
