20th Annual LJ Kiwanis Junior Olympics tops 1,000 students

Students from nine La Jolla Elementary schools competed in track and field events in La Jolla Kiwanis' 20th Junior Olympics held at Edwards Stadium at La Jolla High School.

More than 1,000 children from nine local schools — The Gillispie School, Bird Rock Elementary, Torrey Pines Elementary, La Jolla Elementary, Stella Maris Academy, The Evans School, The Children’s School, All Hallows Academy and the San Diego French American School — participated in the 20th annual La Jolla Junior Olympics hosted by the Kiwanis Club of La Jolla at Edwards Stadium at La Jolla High School Sunday, May 15.

The free event was open to children ages 5 – 12.

Students competed for gold, silver and bronze medals in track and field events, and the top three finishers had medals presented to them by their principals.

Field events included the obstacle course, the standing and running broad jumps and the softball throw. Track events were the 50-, 100-, and 200- meter dash.

All student participants got ribbons.

The Kiwanis Club of La Jolla pays for the event through money raised from various fundraisers, most notably the La Jolla Kiwanis Pancake Day and the La Jolla Half Marathon.

Major event sponsors are Carl and Jeanine Volinski of La Jolla Insurance Services. The event is also supported by La Jolla YMCA, the coaches and principals at each school and from all of the Kiwanis Club of La Jolla members who support the Junior Olympics each year.

About 100 volunteers stage the events each year.

The Spirit Award, which goes to the school with the highest percentage of eligible students participating in the event, went to The Evans School which had 56 percent participation.

The two top finishers, fastest boy and fastest girl, went to Jack Mahony, 11, from La Jolla Elementary and Madeline Fike, 11, from Torrey Pines Elementary.
