Event in La Jolla will mark 60 years of Holocaust commemoration

A Holocaust commemoration (Yom Hashoah) program is set for 1:30 p.m. Sunday, May 1 in the Garfield Theater of the Jewish Community Center, 4126 Executive Drive, La Jolla. The theme will be “Remember, Honor and Teach: Our Survivors, Their Lives and Legacies.” May 1 marks the 60th anniversary of Holocaust commemorations throughout the world.

Dr. Marilyn Harran, scholar, author, and professor of Holocaust education at Chapman University will be the guest speaker. Her talk will be followed by a 20-minute documentary produced for the program.

In the film, three local survivors speak about their lives before the Holocaust and how they survived. Producer Bonnie Bart is a local filmmaker who also produced last year’s acclaimed film “Liberation: 65 Years Later.”

The 90-minute program will open with a military color guard, a musical presentation, and a traditional candle-lighting ceremony with the candles being lit by six Holocaust survivors and the Reverend Canon Jack E. Lindquist representing the non-Jewish community.

Dr. Harran has been an associate of the U.S. Holocaust Memorial Museum, in addition to many other prestigious appointments and awards. In 2008 she received the “Spirit of Anne Frank Award” from the Anne Frank Foundation.

The Holocaust Commemoration is free and open to the public. It has been held in San Diego for more than three decades and is the largest in the country. Last year, more than 700 people attended.

Okay, I admit it. I am a huge fan of the Disney movies, TV shows, merchandise and theme parks. One of my favorite places to visit is Cars Land at Disney California Adventure Park, next to Disneyland Park in Anaheim (I have a well-used Premium Annual Passport). If you haven’t been there, you absolutely must go. Highlights are the recreations of Route 66 and C […]
