La Jolla Rotarians, Interact Club uniting for Work Day
From 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, members of the La Jolla Rotary Club and La Jolla High School Interact Club — and more than 100,000 Rotarians and volunteers from over 40 other districts worldwide — will roll up their sleeves to improve their communities as part of the sixth annual Rotarians At Work Day.
Started in 2006 by the late Bob Watson, past governor of District 5340, which includes La Jolla and 53 other clubs, Rotarians At Work Day happens the last Saturday in April each year and challenges clubs around the world to carry out hands-on service efforts in their communities.
This weekend nearly 40 La Jolla Rotarians will work on renewing the appearances of the many benches and picnic tables dotting the grounds of the La Jolla Recreation Center. The well-used public seating systems will be repaired and refinished, and if time allows, the building brass plaques will get some much needed buffing.
Bench preparation work will be done on Saturday, with refinishing to be completed at LJHS’s wood shop during the following week. On Saturday, May 7, members of both clubs will gather again to reassemble the newly refurbished benches.
