Forums on overpopulation, poverty in Mexico, LGBT rights and college affordability are on tap today at the Clinton Global Initiative University meeting at UC San Diego.

About 1,000 students from around the world are gathering with nonprofit leaders, entrepreneurs and celebrities who are trying to make positive changes in the world through a group started by former President Bill Clinton, who spoke to them Friday night.

“We chose UC San Diego because of its ongoing, consistent commitment to community service,” Clinton said, addressing about 4,000 people at the fourth annual meeting of the group.

He said that “young people today have more power to effect change than any generation that has come before.”

Since Clinton Global Initiative University was founded in 2008, students and organizations have made more than 3,000 commitments aimed at improving lives around the world.

Qualcomm chief executive Paul Jacobs, who also addressed the opening-night crowd, talked about how cellular telephones have changed the social and political landscape.

“There is a revolution in technology, not only in the technology but how it is being used,” he said. “You see the cellphone and social networking being combined to do things like topple dictators. It is helping to connect
people around the world.

“We have seen young people — your age — in Egypt and Tunisia, across north Africa and the Middle East giving themselves a voice they didn’t have previously,” Jacobs said.

Forum participants plan to volunteer at the San Diego Food Bank on Sunday.
