Excitement building for Brees charity golf tournament in May

Excitement is building for the 13th annual Cox Celebrity Championship hosted by Drew Brees that will feature more than 60 celebrity golfers competing for a $100,000 purse and crowning the nation’s best celebrity golfer May 20-22.

One of San Diego County’s premiere sports hospitality events, the Cox Celebrity Championship consists of a two-day Celebrity-Amateur tournament (May 20-21), nightly sponsor parties (May 20-22), and the main event – a 36-hole celebrity competition (May 21-22).

As part of Cox Communications’ title sponsorship, Cox’s locally based TV station, Channel 4 San Diego, will produce a 30-minute special featuring the tournament’s marquee event — the 36-hole, low-gross celebrity-only competition and televise it throughout the summer.

“We are excited to again work alongside Drew and everyone at Cox Communications,” said Dave Miller, president of Integrated Sports Marketing which has promoted the tournament since its inception. “It is a tremendous partnership that goes beyond competitive golf. Each year’s tournament gets bigger and better and, best of all, it has a positive and lasting impact on the San Diego community.”

Sports stars and actors confirmed for this year’s tournament so far include Marshal Faulk, Goose Gossage, Bruce Jenner, actor Ray Romano, Joe Morgan, Chargers defensive back Quentin Jammer, actor Chris Harrison from “The Bachelor,” No doubt drummer Adrian Young and 2010 tournament winner Jack Wagner.

Since its inception in 1999 the Cox Celebrity Championship, originally hosted by Chargers quarterback Stan Humphries and now hosted by ex-Chargers quarterback Drew Brees, has raised more than $1 million on behalf of numerous San Diego-based charities.

This year, a percentage of event ticket sales, auction proceeds and sponsor sales will be donated to the Brees Dream Foundation and dispersed among San Diego non-profit organizations to support its ongoing efforts in San Diego.

The Brees Dream Foundation, founded in 2003 by Brittany and Drew Brees with a mission to advance research in the fight against cancer and provide care, education and opportunities for children in need, distributed more than $135,000 from monies raised at the 2010 Cox Celebrity Championship. Those funds went to Rady Children’s Hospital, San Diego Armed Services YMCA, Friends of Scott Foundation and the National Multiple Sclerosis Society — Pacific South Coast Chapter.

The Brees Dream Foundation has committed and/or contributed more than $6,000,000 to charitable causes and academic institutions.
