UCSD Medical Center and Scripps Memorial Hospital were ranked among the top hospitals in San Diego and the nation, according to U.S. News & World Report’s annual survey out Tuesday.

UCSD was ranked first in San Diego and 11th nationally in pulmonology, according to the magazine.

The hospital also appeared in national rankings for diabetes and endocrinology, geriatrics, orthopedics and psychiatry.

“UC San Diego Health System is proud to be recognized as number one in San Diego by U.S. News & World Report,” said Thomas Jackiewicz, UC San Diego Health System CEO. “As the region’s only academic health system, we are uniquely positioned to deliver the most novel treatments and complex care to all of San Diego.”

Scripps was rated second in San Diego and 34th in the country in heart-related therapies and heart surgery.

The magazine evaluated 5,000 hospitals, and 152 were nationally ranked in a specialty.

Scripps Mercy Hospital was ranked third in San Diego, followed by Sharp Memorial Hospital, Sharp Chula Vista Medical Center and Sharp Mary Birch Hospital for Women.

UCSD Medical Center and Scripps Memorial Hospital did not appear among the magazine’s ranking of the top 14 hospitals in the United States, but were given “best hospital” designations.
