A former secretary of the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs will become chairman of the board of the Fort Rosecrans and Miramar National Cemetery Support Foundation in June, the organization announced Tuesday.

Anthony Principi, 66, who served under former President George W. Bush from 2001-2005, is currently an honorary member of the board of directors and a senior vice president of Pfizer Inc.

He will succeed retired Air Force Brig. Gen. Robert Cardenas, who helped win federal approval for the national cemetery now under construction at MCAS Miramar.

“No one is more deserving and better suited to replace me as chairman of the foundation than the Honorable Anthony Principi,” Cardenas said.

Principi is a Vietnam War veteran, a former Navy lawyer in San Diego and partner in the local law firm of Luce, Forward, Hamilton & Scripps.
The foundation supports activities of the cemeteries and advises on
specific projects.
