LJ High students campaign for Conquer The Cuts fundraiser

A group of about 20 La Jolla High students rallied in front of the school Friday, imploring vehicles passing by to honk in support of La Jolla High School Foundation’s drive to raise $200,000 to “maintain the status quo.”

Students’ screaming was loud and honking by supportive passers-by was responsive.

Called “Conquer the Cuts,” the fundraising campaign was begun recently, spearheaded by foundation boardmembers Beth Penny and Dana Irwin. The name symbolizes that the school and students “are victims, but that they are conquerors.”

ASB president Victoria Frager donned Viking horns and led the Friday morning rally on Nautilus Street between 7 and 7:30 a.m.

“In implementing budget cuts they’re taking about cutting nine of our teachers and a lot of our school programs which are really important to us,” she said. “So we thought we would do our part to increase awareness about the Conquer the Cuts program.”

Frager said ASB is also going to be having a rally tomorrow (Saturday) from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. “We’re going to have a bake sale and basically be doing the same thing,” she said.

The bake sale will be held in front of the school’s Parker Auditorium, 750 Nautilus St.

Frager said  a lot of people are excited about the fundraising program.

“We want to just get people to actually go online,” she said. “If people see us out here in the morning, then maybe they will come to the bake sale and go online”

The ASB president added the rally is “something we’ll probably do a couple more weekends.”

The committee for Conquer The Cuts said this morning that $99,625 has been raised since the campaign started March 2.

  1. Increasing awareness is half the battle to forging a successful campaign and these students should be commended for getting involved to attempt to make something happen. Congratulations on being almost halfway to your goal!
