The La Jolla Country Day girl’s basketball team was unable to beat Windward (Los Angeles) for the third time this season when it mattered most. The Torreys (27-5 overall) lost to the Wildcats 68-58 in the CIF Regional Final on Saturday at Colony High School in Ontario.
With the win, Windward (28-4) will play St. Mary’s (Albany) at ARCO Arena this weekend for the state championship.
The loss ends the season for the Torreys, who were Coastal South champions as well as the San Diego Division IV CIF champs.
Against Windward, however, it was turnovers that got the best of the Torreys. Leading 46-44 heading into the fourth quarter, it appeared that Country Day was on pace to make it to its sixth state title game in the last 12 seasons. The Wildcats ripped off eight straight points to start the final frame, taking a 52-46 advantage. The Torreys were unable to get within four points the rest of the way.
Earlier in the season, the Torreys topped the Wildcats by scores of 71-53 and 45-39, but Windward had recently had one of its best players return.
Sophomore Kelsey Plum led the Torreys with 18 points and nine rebounds in the loss, while juniors Maya and Malina Hood combined for 22 points.
Despite the disappointment, the team returns the core of its team next year in Plum and the Hood sisters.
Country Day golfers break school records
The La Jolla Country Day boys golf team competed in the St. Augustine “Big Nine” on March 16 and 17 at the Cottonwood Ivanhoe Golf Links in Rancho San Diego and walked away with the best score in school history.
After day one, the Torreys led the score five format with a total of 376 over second place St. Augustine which posted a 380. The 376 score, which is 16-over for five players for 18 holes, was a new Country Day record surpassing the 2001 team’s total recorded at the Warner Springs Golf Resort. The team was led by Anthony Paolucci who shot a 72, 69 for a 141. Harry Kang shot a 77, 69 for a 146 and Alberto Sanchez carded a 71, 76 for a 147.
