A break in the rain that moved into the San Diego area late Wednesday was expected for most of today, until another in a series of early spring storms arrives late tonight.

The impending storm will bring showers and gusty winds late tonight into Friday, and will be the third unsettled front out of the Gulf of Alaska to strike this week, according to the National Weather Service.

A stronger storm dropped more than an inch of rain across most parts of San Diego County Sunday and Monday, while the storm system that struck Wednesday night brought only mild rains and a bit more high-mountain snow.

Though milder than the storm that struck Sunday, Wednesday’s system wreaked havoc on at least one roadway.

A stretch of Carmel Mountain Road that goes under Interstate 5 was closed because of 18 inches of water due to rain flooding, said San Diego police Sgt. David Jennings.

The series of storm was expected to conclude with a fourth round of rain and mountains snow Saturday night, the Weather Service advised.
