Rancho Relaxo sold, now being remodeled

On Thursday, a Bird Rock resident who purchased the distressed Rancho Relaxo property stood nearby as a green construction fence was erected around the property and a work crew removed debris and cleaned out the single-family home at 5460 La Jolla Hermosa.

“I live in the neighborhood,” said new owner Steven Cyfzkiewicz, who would not disclose what he paid for the house that has been the subject of ongoing residents’ complaints. “The plan is not to tear it down. We’re going to fix it up and then see where it goes from there.”

Cyfzkiewicz said he was uncertain how long the remodeling would take.

Asked why he purchased the distressed property which has been a neighorhood eyesore for years, he replied, “We just love Bird Rock and knew that this was just an eyesore in the neighborhood.  We wanted to clean it up.”

Neighbors have been compiling a laundry list of complaints against a revolving door of tenants on the “nuisance” 900-square-foot, single-family home, whose landlord, it was claimed, had been operating for years as a lodging/rooming house in likely violation of San Diego Municipal Codes.

Recently, 18 neighbors banded together with the cooperation of San Diego Police, First District Councilwoman Sherri Lightner and Supervisor Pam Slater-Price and a host of governmental agencies to bring a consolidated legal action against the property owned by the Blakely Nan M. Trust. Plaintiffs’ nuisance lawsuit was heard in Small Claims Court Jan. 31.

A judgment of $136,000 was returned for neighbors a couple of weeks later. The property was also in arrears nearly $7,000 on property taxes and the residence had been scheduled to be sold at a public auction at the San Diego Convention Center on March 18. But back taxes were paid in full on the property this week before the auction deadline.
