Aztecs to face N. Colorado in Tucson

San Diego State received the No. 2 seed in the West Region of the NCAA men’s basketball tournament and will face 15th-seeded Northern Colorado Thursday in Tucson, Ariz.

“We are very excited about not only the two seed, but maybe more important for us, staying close to home … a short plane ride and not that far of a car ride for our fans to get out and watch us play,” coach Steve Fisher told CBS College Sports on Sunday.

This is the second consecutive season the Aztecs have reached the NCAA tournament, a school first, and the seventh time overall. San Diego State has never won an NCAA tournament game.

At 32-2, San Diego State shares the best record among all NCAA Division I teams with Ohio State and Kansas.

“The key to what we’ve done is we are really a good defensive team,” Fisher told CBS College Sports. “We can guard and we can guard hard. We’ve allowed our defense to create offense for us.”

Fisher called the Aztecs “a fun team to watch because of the athleticism we have.”

“We can create some open floor opportunities,” Fisher said. “We’re really an explosive team that can score a lot of points on you in a hurry.”

Northern Colorado, 21-10, earned its first NCAA tournament berth by defeating Montana, 65-60, in the Big Sky Conference championship game Wednesday.

Since the inception of the 64-team tournament in 1985, the No. 2 seed has a 100-4 record against the No. 15 team.

If San Diego State wins, it would face the winner of the Penn State- Temple game Saturday.
