Ethics Center partners with CONNECT

The Center for Ethics in Science and Technology announced it is joining with CONNECT to expand San Diego’s participation in considering the ethics of new science and technology.

The 5-year-old ethics center has brought scientists and the public together to talk about how developments such as stem cell research, globalwarming, cyber security and robotics.

Now, CONNECT will provide support for the center’s programs so its board can focus on bringing timely events on relevant ethical issues to the forefront for public conversation.
Among its programs are a variety of special events and public lectures, such as the popular Exploring Ethics program, a free public lecture series held monthly at the Fleet Science Center in Balboa Park. Each meeting begins with an informative and provocative lecture by a leading expert in science and technology, followed by spirited and thoughtful discussion to identify both ethical challenges and solutions.

The Ethics Center was founded in 2004 by Michael Kalichman, Ph.D., professor of pathology and director of the Research Ethics Program at UCSD, and Lawrence M. Hinman, Ph.D., professor of philosophy at the University of San Diego.

The Ethics Center will maintain close working relationships with San Diego State University, UC San Diego, and the University of San Diego as well as other major nonprofit organizations such as the Reuben H. Fleet Science Center, Sanford-Burnham Institute for Medical Research, California Western School of Law and The Neurosciences Institute.
