San Diego’s population has increased by 6.9 per cent since 2000 and now stands at 1.3 million, the U.S Census Bureau reported Tuesday.

The figures show that San Diego remains California’s second biggest city.

Whites remained a majority of the population at 58.9 percent while Hispanics accounted for 28.8 percent, Asian Americans for 15.9 percent and blacks, 6.7 percent.

The county of San Diego as a whole grew faster than the city, at a rate of 10 percent over the last decade, to 3.09 million.

Statewide, Latinos had the largest increase in population over the decade and now make up 37.6 percent of the population, while whites dropped to about 40 percent. Asian expansion was 12.8 percent, and the black population
saw 5.8 percent growth, figures show.

California’s overall population rose 10 percent, from 33.8 million in 2000 to 37.2 million in 2010, according to the Census Bureau.
