Press Release

A group of UCSD students gathered on campus Friday to draw attention to the rising costs of higher education and the role of philanthropy.

The UCSD Student Foundation, an organization that facilitates peer fundraising campaigns to benefit student scholarships, organized the lunchtime barbecue. Since 2002, the group has awarded more than $60,000 in scholarships.

“While students pay more than $11,000 per year to attend the university, it costs more than double that per student to fund the education, services, resources and opportunities here,” Geoff Honda, president of the foundation, said in a press release. “It’s because of the generosity of private donors that we are getting a world-class educational experience at UC San Diego, and we feel that it’s important for students to understand and appreciate this. ”

The release also noted that less than 10 percent of UCSD’s current funding comes from the state and that Gov. Jerry Brown’s recent budget proposal cuts $500 million from the University of California budget.

“The UCSD Student Foundation is trying to do its part by awarding scholarships to UCSD students,” Honda said. “All of the scholarships we award are fully funded by the generosity of fellow UCSD students.”

The UCSD Student Foundation was established in 1999 with a donation of $100,000 from UCSD alumni Patricia ’83 and Marc Brutten ’79.
