Week in Sports: Torreys drop first losses of the season

Tough games against top teams, that is what playing in holiday tournaments are all about. For La Jolla Country Day, both the boys and girls team’s lost for the first time during the past week thanks in large part to stepping up their competition.

For the girls — who are ranked No. 7 in the nation by MaxPreps — fell short in the Nike Tournament in Phoenix last week against Etiwanda, 61-59. Etiwanda has an enrollment of roughly 3,300 students and competes in the CIF Southern Section.  Despite the loss, the Torreys are currently 9-1 on the season and are led by sophomore Kelsey Plum, who averages nearly 19 points per game.

As for the boys, they lost their first game of the season to Ralston Valley, 56-41, on the road in Arvada, Colo.  The boys’ team is currently 7-2 on the season and are led by sophomore Sage Burmeister and junior Frank Bamford, both who average nearly 12 points per game.

JD Neri led the Vikings with 9 points.

JD Neri led the Vikings with 18 points while Sophia Sowers added seven.

Nike Tournament

*Etiwanda 61, La Jolla Country Day 59

Maya Hood led the Torreys with 22 points and 18 rebounds while Kaylah Miller added 21 in the team’s first loss of the season.

Dominique Love led the Knights with 31 points and five rebounds

The loss for the Torreys was the first this season after winning the team’s first seven games.

Stephen Kaiser led the Knights with 16 points while Dominique Love added 13 and Dominique Watkins added 12.

Malina Hood led the Torreys with 15 points while Maya Hood added 11 points.

JD Neri led the Vikings with 10 points.

Sophia Sowers led the Vikings with 15 points; JD Neri was named the tournament co-MVP.

Monday, Dec. 27

Boys soccer

Jake Skoll scored the lone goal for the Torreys while goalie Adam Schechtman got the shutout.

La Jolla Country Day 2, L.A. Community Charter 0

Hunter Khaleghi and Trevor Alexander each had goals for the Torreys. Adam Schechtman had his second shutout of the day.

Mt. Carmel Holiday Hoops Classic

Ryan Mills led the Vikings with 13 points.
