One recent December day, D. Lynn Reeves and Mary Coakley journeyed to Justin Snow’s Escondido foundry, BronzeArtWork, to check on progress with the sculpture of JJ the baby gray whale that was orphaned and nursed back to health at SeaWorld. It was their first view of the work since they delivered the life-size clay model there in May.

The sculpture of the 14-1/2-foot mammal is a project of Friends of La Jolla Shores, which has raised $100,000 of the $125,000 need to pay for the project. Coakley is the driving force behind the effort and Reeves created the model, from which Snow and his team are building the sculpture of cast bronze panels.

On the day of the visit, Snow and his associates were down to fitting together the last few of the 46 pieces that are coming together to make the sculpture that will be placed at the Shores Kellogg Park playground. After that the seams will be smoothed out and patina applied before JJ makes an appearance at La Jolla Shores in 2011.
