BYU likely contenders in 2011 Poinsettia Bowl

By City News Service

“BYU played a significant role in the growth and success of the Holiday Bowl,” said Eric Graves, the president of the San Diego Bowl Game Association. “It’s so fitting that they, along with their incredibly loyal fans, will join us and participate in San Diego’s newer game, the San Diego County Credit Union Poinsettia Bowl.”

The Cougars will be matched with a team from the Mountain West Conference, a league that BYU is leaving at the end of the school year to be independent in football. They will compete in the West Coast Conference in
other sports.

The bowl game and school entered into an advance deal similar to the one bringing the U.S. Naval Academy to town next week to play San Diego State University.

Teams have to be 6-6, with only one of the wins being over a lower-division team, to play in a bowl game.
