Opinion: Time for an update on Torrey Pines Road project

Many of you have been following the progress of the Torrey Pines Corridor Project over the past several years. It will provide traffic calming, slope stabilization, pedestrian and bicycle safety improvements, and landscaping to the heavily traveled stretch of Torrey Pines Road between La Jolla Shores Drive and Prospect Place. Last year, I worked with the mayor to secure a $500,000 federal stimulus grant to fund the design phase of this important project.
After several months of hard work, the city engineers and consultants working on the preliminary design of the project are ready to provide an update on their progress to the community. I will be joining them for an informational forum at 6 p.m. on Jan. 19 at the La Jolla Rec Center.
At the meeting, there will be an update on the preliminary design work that has been completed so far, an explanation of how the project could be broken down into phases, cost estimates, and time for questions and answers.
This informational forum will be followed by a meeting of the La Jolla Traffic and Transportation Board on Feb. 24, at which time the community will have an opportunity to provide input on their priorities for the project.
In other great news, more and more Village business owners are continuing to get involved in the formation of the new La Jolla merchants association. Merchants from many different types of businesses have attended the informational coffees, and I was pleased to see so many new faces at the recent organizational meeting.
