Week in Sports: Torreys capture basketball tournament title
By Phil Dailey
La Jolla Country Day dominated the Sweet Sixteen Girls Invitational Basketball Tournament last weekend, winning four games en route to the title.
The team dismantled Lincoln in the first-round matchup, leading 53-3 at halftime before winning 88-12. The Torreys (5-0 overall) then beat West Hills, the defending CIF Division II champs, 56-18, followed by a semifinal win over Colorado’s Highlands Ranch and a finals victory over Los Angeles’ Windward.
It was an especially busy weekend for junior Maya Hood, who scored 25 points and grabbed 10 rebounds Friday night and then on Saturday helped the volleyball team to a state title. After the volleyball match in San Jose, she boarded a plane back to San Diego and notched a double-double with 20 points and 15 rebounds, earning tournament MVP honors. Kaylah Miller and Kelsey Plum were also named to the all-tournament team.
Along with the team’s perfect start to the season, the Torreys are ranked No. 33 in the latest ESPN Rise rankings.
