Our View: Take time this Thanksgiving to remember the small things
When that moment comes at the family dinner table on Thursday and we are asked to share what you’re thankful for this year, it’s easy to forget some things.
Of course, there’s always the gratitude for the love of our family and friends, our good health and our freedom. But often, we pass over the smaller things, such as living in a community that is blessed with its incomparable location and people who have the wherewithal to help others.
And what about the teachers and childcare providers who keep our children safe each day, working to help them learn the wonders of our world and the practical skills that will make them good citizens?
There’s also the blessing of having a world-class university in our backyard that not only gives us wonderful cultural opportunities but also has spawned new technologies and contributed to our local economy. We also are lucky to have world-class medical care at our backdoor, with Scripps Health and UCSD Medical Center at the forefront of research and new technologies.
Speaking of research, think of all the places where scientists labor daily in search of cures for human ailments or in search of information about the world around us — they’re almost too numerous to name for fear of leaving one out. For starters, though, look to the Salk Institute, the Sanford-Burnham Medical Research Institute and the Scripps Institution of Oceanography.
But closer to home, we should be thankful that we have a business community to call our own — shopkeepers and restaurant owners and workers, hairdressers, fitness trainers, lawyers and bankers. These are the people that we can show our thanks to by staying close to home when it’s time to shop or find a service.
At the Light, we add thanks for our readers and advertisers who give us the chance to share our community with each of you.
May your Thanksgiving be a happy one.
