La Jolla Country Day volleyball advances in state tournament

The La Jolla Country Day volleyball team won its opening-round match of the state tournament Tuesday night with relative ease. The Torreys took down visiting Upland Christian Academy (Rancho Cucamonga) in three straight sets, 25-10, 25-13 and 25-6.

Lauren Birks led the Torreys with eight kills, while Kendall Peterkin added six.

Prior to playing Country Day, the Eagles (32-6) were a perfect 14-0 in their conference.

Up next for the Torreys is St. Margaret’s (San Juan Capistrano), which beat Serra (Gardena) High in its opening-round game Tuesday night. The Tartans are 20-5-1 on the season, which includes a prefect 9-0 record in the Academy League of the Southern Section. Saturday’s game is at 7 p.m. at La Jolla Country Day.

The winner advances to the Southern California Division V Finals on Nov. 30 against either Central Valley Christian (Visalla) or Santa Fe Christian. The Southern California Finals winner then heads to San Jose to play for the state championship.
