UCSD marks its golden anniversary with a gala for scholarships

As part of its yearlong collection of 50th anniversary events, UCSD hosted “an evening of the unexpected” on Nov. 13 with Celebrate50 at its RIMAC Arena. Guests, including community leaders, donors, alumni, faculty, staff and friends, gathered on campus to experience through music, dance and video, the historic events and people that marked UCSD’s transformation from ship to shore.

Chancellor’s Medals were awarded to two individuals and three couples (the most at one time in the university’s history) to recognize outstanding support and service to UCSD. The honorees are Pauline Foster, Audrey Geisel, Irwin and Joan Jacobs, Jerome and Miriam Katzin, and Ernest and Evelyn Rady.

Proceeds from the event will benefit undergraduate scholarships and graduate fellowships as part of the university’s $50 million student support campaign, Invent the Future.
