Artist-in-residence David Humphrey sets up shop at LUX

New York City-based David Humphrey, a senior critic at Yale School of Art, is turning LUX on its head, according to staff, with paintings that employ landscape, figuration, iconography, exuberant colors and a cavalcade of kitsch images to provide a humorous and sometimes biting narrative of middle-class malaise.

As the art institute’s latest artist-in-residence, Humphrey is working in public view through Dec. 4, with an exhibit from his collection up through Jan. 1.

The institute is at 1550 South El Camino Real in Encinitas. Hours are 1-5 p.m. Thursdays and Fridays; 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturdays.

Since his first show in 1984, Humphrey has been exhibiting nationally and internationally. His work is in the permanent collections of the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Walker Art Center, the Carnegie Institute, and the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, among others. He received a BFA from the Maryland Institute College of Art and an MA in liberal studies from NYU. An anthology of his writing, “Blind Handshake,” was released in 2009 by Periscope Publishing.
