Scripps Health announced Wednesday a $2 billion plan to rebuild Scripps Memorial Hospital La Jolla and replace it with a multi-facility medical campus over the next 25 years.

The existing hospital, which opened in 1964, will be replaced with three hospital towers. The 43-acre campus will also include research and graduate medical education facilities, an outpatient treatment center and offices.

“We are creating a full-service, regional medical campus that builds on our history, begun by Ellen Browning Scripps in 1924, who had the vision to
combine high quality health care with medical research,” said Chris Van Gorder, chief executive officer of Scripps Health.

“Miss Ellen’s vision lives on in this bold and comprehensive plan to bring innovative, patient-centered care to San Diego while providing a destination for those outside our region who are seeking access to the most advanced, high-quality treatments,” he said.

Under the plan, the existing hospital will be razed. Work on the first tower is expected to begin in June, according to
Scripps Health. The 383,000-square-foot, $393 million building is slated to open for patient care sometime in 2015.

It will house the Scripps Cardiovascular Institute, have 108 patient beds in private rooms, 60 intensive care beds, a half-dozen operating rooms,
cardiac catheterization labs, research space and graduate education facilities. To date, $32 million has been raised toward the $125 million fundraising goal for the first hospital tower, according to Scripps Health.
