Four armed robbers were arrested Friday evening after allegedly breaking into the home of La Jolla resident and author Jeanne Jones, a well known food columnist who lives on La Jolla Scenic Drive South, San Diego police reported.

Shortly after 6 p.m., police said in a press  release they received a call from “a UPS delivery driver, who reported that he saw masked men with handguns leaving the residence at 6692 La Jolla Scenic South.”

The driver reported the men had left in a yellow Nissan SUV, according to police. When the call was received, the department’s ABLE helicopter was nearby and “spotted the vehicle leaving the area,” a press release issued by watch commander Dave Stafford stated.

With the helicopter crew informing officers on the ground about where the vehicle was, patrol units caught up with the SUV as it was eastbound on La Jolla Parkway.

Stafford’s release described what happened next: “Officers initiated a traffic stop on the vehicle on S/R 52, just west of Regents Road.  Officers conducted a high-risk traffic stop and detained four individuals inside the vehicle. Officers recovered evidence connecting them to the robbery, including a semi-automatic handgun and property believed to belong to the victims.”

All four suspects are being booked for armed robbery.

As police were making the traffic stop, which caused a major backup into La Jolla and onto eastbound 52 from I-5, the robbery victims called police, Stafford said in the release. Police arrived at the home and found four people, one of whom sustained minor injuries. Jones apparently was not physically injured, according to early reports.

The injured woman was reported to have been Jones caretaker, who was treated for a gash on her face and released. Jones’ husband Don Breitenberg and another caretaker were also in the house and were not injured.

The robbers took an undisclosed amount of cash and other personal property, police reported. The investigation was continuing late Friday night.
