Newcomers welcome to Scout troop’s open house

Boys Scouts of America

If your son is a Webelos II Cub Scout who has earned (or is about to earn) an Arrow of Light, or if you have a son, age 10 or 11, interested in Scouting, Troop 506 invites you to its open house 6:30 p.m. Monday, Nov. 8 at the La Jolla United Methodist Church, 6063 La Jolla Blvd.

The guest speaker will be San Diego Senior Lifeguard Mark Feighan and there will be food, games, giveaways and exhibit tables about upcoming events.

The Boy Scouts of America has been teaching young men how to enjoy the outdoors through activities like camping, hiking, canoeing and backpacking for the last 100 years. Scouting prepares boys to become responsible, self-reliant adults by instilling leadership skills and emphasizing the importance of citizenship and character.

Last year, Troop 506 went on a multi-day canoe trip down the Colorado River, snow skiing (and boarding) at Snow Summit, mountain biking in the Lagunas, backpacking on the Pacific Crest Trail and in the Sierra, scuba diving in the Florida Keys and at Catalina Island, surfing at San Elijo State Beach, horseback riding at Warner Springs, and camping and hiking in the local mountains and deserts.

In prior years the troop went rock climbing at Joshua Tree, backpacking at Philmont, geo-caching in Mission Trails Park, deep-sea fishing, white water rafting, and tubing on Mission Bay. Troop 506 also believes in rank advancement and community service with more than 50 Eagle Scouts to date. The troop was founded in 1964 and chartered by the La Jolla United Methodist Church. Troop 506 consists of 40 scouts, ages 11 to 17. Questions? Call (858) 204-6259 or visit www.lajollatroop506.com
