Revised plan for La Jolla Hillel project to be aired Oct. 27

A public meeting on an environmental impact report for Hillel, a Jewish student center proposed for a triangular parcel near UCSD, will be held from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. Oct. 27 at the La Jolla Library, 7555 Draper Ave.

Hillel has resubmitted plans for a downsized project to the city and requested a site development permit and right-of-way vacation for a phased project for a 6,600-square-foot Jewish student center. The new plan outlines a significantly smaller project than the 12,000-square-foot facility proposed several years ago that drew heavy
community opposition from the adjoining single-family neighborhood.

Residents around the 0.76-acre lot on the south side of La Jolla Village Drive between Torrey Pines Road and La Jolla Scenic Way want the property to be kept in perpetuity as an open space buffer between the university and surrounding homes.
In February 2009, the California Appellate Court published a judgment requiring Hillel to do a full environmental report for their project. The organization brought the land from the city in 2006 for $940,000 and attached a number of conditions to the deal, including a requirement that more parking be added.

Written and mail-in comments may also be sent to Elizabeth Shearer-Nguyen, City of San Diego Development Services Center, 1222 First Ave., San Diego 92101, or e-mailed to DSDEAS@sandiego.gov. Be sure to reference the project name, Hillel Student Center of San Diego, and number, 212995, in the subject line, within 30 days of the Oct. 27 meeting.
