Riders cross La Jolla Shores finish line after 620-mile Million Dollar Challenge

More than 140 cyclists including NBA Hall of Famer Bill Walton road into Kellogg Park in La Jolla Shores Friday afternoon, completing a rain-drenched, 620-mile ride from San Francisco to San Diego in the Challenged Athletes Foundation (CAF) Million Dollar Challenge presented by Qualcomm.

The week’s events hosted by CAF culminates Sunday in a triathlon that starts and finishes at La Jolla Cove.
The first two finishers coming through the trademark CAF inflated arch to the applause of well wishers carrying signs, banners and bouquets of flowers were Jeff Jacobs, son of Qualcomm founder Irwin Jacobs, and Jeffrey Essakow, CAF board president and founding member.

The fifth annual cycling event raised more than $1.3 million for the foundation, which provides opportunities and support for disabled athletes. Funds raised in the Challenge go to acquire handcycles, sports chairs, sports prosthetics and other adaptive sports equipment for challenged athletes.

On Sunday, Aspen Medical Products San Diego Triathlon Challenge begins at 7 a.m. and will wrap up about 3:30 p.m.

The day’s activities include a 1.2-mile swim, 56-mile bike and 13.1-mile run distance triathlon, the Tour de Cove (a four and a half hour spin-a-thon) and a 5K fitness walk that all take place simultaneously in La Jolla Cove.

Several streets, including Coast Boulevard near the Cove, will be closed at various times throughout the day.

• Coast Boulevard will be closed between Prospect Street and Girard Avenue from 5 a.m. to 4 p.m. Sunday and also will have no parking signs posted beginning Friday night.

• In addition, the number one lane of North Torrey Pines Road between Prospect and La Jolla Shores Drive will be closed from 8 to 10 a.m. Sunday.
