Preps come out to support author’s new poke at traditions
The Brooks Brothers store, 1055 Wall Street in La Jolla, hosted a meet and greet book signing with “The Official Preppy Handbook” author Lisa Birnbach on Sept. 27. Birnbach, who wrote the humorous Old Money bible in 1980, recently teamed with designer Chip Kidd to revisit the guidebook, updating it for 2010 in “True Prep: It’s a New Old World.” Guests enjoyed cocktails, hors d’oeuvres and regaling Birnbach with fond preparatory school recollections.
According to the Urban Dictionary …
… a true preppy is someone who wears, but is not limited to, Polo, Lilly Pulitzer, Brooks Brothers, Lacoste, LL Bean (i.e. duck boots), ribbon belts, prints (i.e. cords with embroidered whales, palm trees, etc), sweaters tied around their neck, collar always popped. Preppies are partial to monogrammed and engraved items (tote bags, oxford shirts, jewelry, money clips, etc.). Their colors are always bright; favorites include pink and lime green.
