Sally Thornton was honored as the 2010 “Spirit of ’76: Patriot of the Year” by the San Diego Chapter of the Freedoms Foundation at Valley Forge.

San Diego Chapter President Adele Lancaster presented the award at the “Honoring the Flags of Our Heroes” luncheon event June 11 at MCRD’s Bay View Restaurant. The award was also acknowledged on July 29 at the Del Mar racetrack.

In 1967, Thornton was instrumental in organizing the San Diego Chapter with a mission to “impart to all Americans an understanding of and commitment to our national heritage.” She has served actively in a variety of offices including president. In addition to her involvement with Freedoms Foundation, she has supported many San Diego organizations that benefit children, older adults and the arts.

In the early 1990s, The John M. and Sally B. Thornton Foundation contributed the funding for the Thornton Hospital, the nationally acclaimed teaching hospital at the UCSD. Thornton is receiving this award for her many years as an active community volunteer, tireless civic leader, and extraordinary humanitarian.

Each year, the San Diego Chapter of Freedoms Foundation sends more than 20 students to the historic Valley Forge campus and Washington, D.C., to learn about America.
