Chargers making plans for home opener

The Chargers helmet pays tribute to former Head Coach Don Coryell, 85, and defensive tackle Gary 'Big Hands' Johnson, 57

The Chargers have added some special touches for the fans to raise the energy level in Qualcomm Stadium for their much-awaited home opener versus the Jacksonville Jaguars on Sunday, Sept. 19.

Ticket holders are urged to get to their seats in time for the pregame festivities. The team has planned a special tribute to two Chargers Hall of Famers who passed away this offseason. Fans will have a chance to pay tribute while the team presents a moving video and moment of silence for former Head Coach Don Coryell, 85, and defensive tackle Gary “Big Hands” Johnson, 57, both members of the team’s Hall of Fame who passed away in July and August, respectively.

The Chargers also will wear helmet decals, one showing “Air Coryell” and the other showing Johnson’s number 79.

Following the tribute, fans will be lifted out of their seats when skydivers land on the stadium field, a giant American flag is unfurled by Marines during the National Anthem, and the final crescendo will be a flyover to kick off the home opener.

The Chargers have approximately 12,000 tickets available for the opener, including 2,000 Club seats, some of the best seats in the stadium. Fans without tickets have a wide variety of price levels and locations to pick from, starting at $54 in the Chargers’ Family sections.

The team has until 1:15 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 16, to sell enough tickets to assure its opener will be televised live in Southern California.
